James Owen spent 23 years inside the Long Beach Fire Department, capping nearly 30 years in fire service and public safety. He ran into burning buildings, led from the front, and did what the job demanded. What the job never taught him was what to do when the fire followed him home.
A first responder since 1990, James joined LBFD in 2000 and rose to Captain before retirement. He earned a Meritorious Bravery Award during his career and was recognized by the Los Angeles District Attorney for mentoring at-risk youth.

That journey became the foundation of The Last Patient.
Today he speaks nationally on resilience, leadership, and the need for systemic change in high-loyalty professions. He is the founder of Camp Pivot, a mission-driven initiative focused on trauma recovery for first responders and anyone navigating high-stress environments.
